Now, and even back in the days of slavery, it is about the personal beliefs of the poloticians that comprise the parties, and that is something that changes. It has been a ling time since the government was about party beliefs. But nowadays, the poloticians believing in a less interfering government also happen to be the most bigoted, hence, more racist people vote republican. If the Republican party were the same now as it was then, I'd have voted for it. Back then, the poloticians that believed in a strong government, also happened to be racist. It has less to do with the party, and more the people in it.
